What is Hispanic Impact? The purpose of the Ohio Hispanic Impact Campaign is to offer facts, figures, information, and profiles which detail the positive contributions of Hispanic Ohioans year-round, and not just during Hispanic Heritage Month. Please join us as we celebrate the unsung heroes and many points of light across Ohio who, along with their counterparts from other communities, truly help create a better Ohio for all. Our fourth profile is from Columbus: Kenny Ramos Dedicated to Bridging Cultural Gaps Kenny Ramos has been a staple to the Latino community in Columbus, Ohio since the early 80’s. Currently a police officer with the Strategic Response Bureau, Community Liaison office for the 19th precinct, Ramos started as a helicopter pilot with the U.S. Army, from where he retired as chief warrant officer 4 in the aviation branch. As one of the few Latinos in the force in the city he loves and has seen his children grow, Ramos was one of the first police officers to provide a bridge of understanding and communication flowing between the then growing Latino population and the police department they did not trust. “He saw a problem, a gap, and provided a solution,” explains Benito Lucio, a local radio personality. Ramos states that his city-wide presence was more by acclamation than by design. “I was supposed to be the liaison for my precinct, but as I got pulled to tend to Latino issues in various points outside of my district, it just snowballed until my supervisors supported my involvement,” he says. (Hispanic Impact Profile #1: Adelante) (Hispanic Impact Profile #3: LEON) (Hispanic Impact Profile #4: Su Casa) Ohio Latino Demographics Ohio's Latino community is growing rapidly. In the past decade, Latinos in Ohio have increased by nearly 30%, which is helping to offset the population losses of whites, whose population decreased by 24,000 residents between 2000 and 2007. To understand the impact of and status of Latinos in Ohio, please view our new "Ohio Latino Demographics" webpage.
