Senate Bill 260, Immigration Enforcement Bill

House Bill 477, English Only Bill

Ohio Senate

SB 23 - Involuntary Servitude (Goodman). Prohibits involuntary servitude, sexual servitude of a minor, and trafficking in persons for forced labor or services.

SB 205 - Human Trafficking (Fedor). Strengthens Ohio's Human Trafficking laws.  Note: Substitute language of SB 205 was integrated into HB 280 Abortion/Abuse/Trafficking (Schneider), which passed and became law.

SB 260 - “Immigration Enforcement Bill”  (Cates). Authorizes a county sheriff, at the direction of the county board of commissioners and with permission from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, to investigate civil violations of immigration law, and take persons charged with civil violations of immigration law into custody.  Currently, law enforcement agents may investigate only criminal violations of immigration law, and take into custody persons charged with criminal violations of immigration law. SCR 16 - Border Enforcement Resolution (Cates). Urges the President of the United States and the United States Congress to secure our nation's borders and to aggressively enforce all existing federal immigration laws.

Ohio House of Representatives

HB 15 - Human Trafficking (Chandler). Strengthens Ohio's Human Trafficking laws.

HB 308 - Immigration Omnibus Bill (Domenick, Combs). Requires in specified situations the verification of immigration status of persons who are not United States citizens, to impose state income taxes at a rate of six per cent per annum on the compensation of specified independent contractors who fail to document such verification, and to restrict the employment, transport, post-secondary education benefits, driver's licenses and identification cards, and receipt of public benefits of persons who are not legal residents of the United States.

HB 409 - Commercial License Tests (Batchelder). Requires that commercial driver's license tests be given in English.

HB 477 – “English Only Bill” (Mecklenborg). Requires the use of the English language by state and local government entities in official actions and proceedings, subject to certain exceptions. (See in depth policy resource section above).
